Novi Vein team members volunteered for this year”s Race for the Cure in Detroit, Michigan. The 19th Annual Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure was held Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Comerica Park. Komen for the Cure® is the world”s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting for awareness. Nearly 1.5 billion has been invested, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the cause. A number of donations and grants have made the race possible. The race was made possible by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, one of 39 national Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States. The Komen Race for the Cure® series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, includes over 100 Races in the U.S. and five international races. Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. Breast cancer occurs in men also, but the number of new cases is small. Early detection and effective treatment is expected to reduce the number of women who die from breast cancer, and development of new methods of prevention continue to be studied. For more information about the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, the Komen Race for the Cure and breast cancer awareness and education, visit the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure online.
